Rosemary Shepherd has spent decades deciphering the techniques used in early bobbin lace. In this process, she referred to the oldest pattern books from the 16th century (Le Pompe and Nüw Modelbuoch), she also studied surviving lace from museums and private collections and, lace in early paintings.  On the basis of about 30 examples, the author explains how the old lace was reconstructed and the techniques which are necessary to make it. The book shows early lace. The patterns are for complex plaited lace which can be reproduced only with the help of detailed thread diagrams.  For those interested in history, fans of freehand lace and lace makers who want to try some rather unusual patterns.
